Today Pat Summitt announced that she will be stepping down as head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers basketball team. The move comes less than a year after her diagnosis with early onset dementia-Alzheimer’s type. She will remain as an adviser to the team and has been named head coach emeritus. Forget gender, Coach Summitt is a basketball legend POINT BLANK PERIOD !

Summitt’s career spanned not just those 38 years, but the creation of contemporary women’s basketball—a sport that Summitt did much to bring into being. “Summitt’s greatest impact was helping redefine the way women could compete and be coached,” Yahoo’s Dan Wetzel writes. “She came of age in an era when women were to be protected—there was still 6-on-6 basketball, where players only ran half the court, because some thought girls couldn’t handle any additional exertion. Summitt scoffed at that and coached the game like Henry Iba or Bob Knight would’ve, no excuses, no limits, no apologies.”
